Most Indian EV owners worry about fast charging. Their maker's documents worry about other things, and say so in writing. Pick your vehicle and this shows the rules your own maker states, word for word, and then what the published research says wears a pack down.
Tata Motors states 3 rules about how the Nexon.ev 45 is charged, in its own documents.
At least one of them puts a claim outside cover if you break it. Most owners have never read these.
Charging the car in a way the maker calls improper can be treated as unusual stress and put a claim outside cover.
The vehicle / HV battery is subjected to any form of unusual stress, including stress due to improper charging racing; overloading; or other misuse; abuse; or negligent use
After at most four DC or opportunity charges, do one AC charge to 100 percent. This is printed as a condition of the Lifetime HV Battery Warranty.
after a maximum of four DC / opportunity charging cycles, you must use AC charging to 100% State of Charge for the optimum performance of the high voltage battery pack
Do not accumulate more than two EV charging pattern warnings between services. You cannot see this counter.
Vehicle shall not have more than 2 warnings related to EV charging pattern between two service intervals.
Your maker asks for the full charge without saying why. Two makers that do explain it, MG and BYD, say the same thing: the pack balances its cells and re-sets its charge gauge near the top of the range. That is housekeeping, and it is a different question from how long the battery then sits there. Do the full charge when your maker asks, then drive, rather than leaving the car parked at 100 percent for days.
Below the rules, the published research on what actually wears a pack down, ranked for your answers.
You charge high and leave it there. Across 22,700 vehicles, cars that spend more than 80 percent of their time at extreme charge levels lose 2.0 percent a year against 1.4 percent for cars that do not.
Do this. Set the daily limit lower and charge the night before you need the range, not days ahead.
Geotab 2026, 22,700 vehicles, by share of time at extreme state of charge.
Calendar ageing speeds up with temperature in every study that has measured it. The credible published range is roughly 1.3 to 2.8 times faster for every 10 degrees. You picked the hot end of both questions, so this is where your capacity goes.
Do this. Park in shade or below ground where you have the choice, and avoid charging right after a long fast drive.
Mejia-Ruiz et al. 2023, fitted on 14 laboratory datasets. Geotab finds hot-climate vehicles lose 0.4 percentage points a year more, on an American definition of hot that most of India exceeds.
Makers of LFP vehicles ask owners to charge to 100 percent periodically. Ford states the reason in its own manual, to maintain range accuracy. LFP's voltage is almost flat from about 20 to 95 percent, so the gauge cannot locate itself without a full charge. It is a calibration instruction, not a health claim.
Do this. Do the periodic full charge your manual asks for. Keep the average low the rest of the time.
Dahn's group at Dalhousie cycled LFP cells in a 75 to 100 percent window and saw them fade about five times faster than cells cycled 0 to 25 percent, at 40 degrees.
At 1 to 3 sessions a month you are well under the share at which any fleet study detects an effect.
Do this. Nothing to change.
The penalty is mostly thermal. Idaho National Laboratory ran the same protocols at pack and cell level: about 5 points apart at pack level, under 1 percent at cell level, and the fast-charged pack reached 41 to 45 degrees.
Every rule on this page is quoted from a document published by the maker and recorded in our open datasets with the document it came from. The research is drawn from the studies above, all of them measured outside India. This is not a measurement of your battery and it cannot predict its life.
